Picture
catching a trout on a sunny day, with pole bowed and line stretched
as it breaks through the water. This is how I would describe finding
and reading John Ploughman’s Talk. At the very onset there is
an exhilarating adrenaline rush that cannot be described. Diving into
John Ploughman’s Talk was such an experience, and just knowing
that Charles Spurgeon wrote this gem, which is far different than any
of his theological writings, makes it even more special.
John Ploughman’s Talk, written by Charles Spurgeon, cuts to
the chase with his witty yet straightforward discourse on several important
issues that were relevant back then and continue to demand attention
today. It appears that, where formal sermons may have fallen on deaf
ears, John Ploughman takes to the streets in the common language of
the people and lays bare the issues of man in his no-nonsense style.
When this book was first published, I can only imagine the talk on
the streets as Spurgeon hit the mark head-on and close to home. Yet
that is what makes this book special—it makes you feel as if
he were right here with you. The more I think about Spurgeon’s
unique writing style, I see a theologian who decided to be creative
and, with an “out-of-the-box” approach, reach the heart
of man—and that he did. His ability to make biblical principles
easy to grasp and practice, makes this reading enjoyable and, in most
instances, amusing.
Though not written for the young, this is a book I would recommend
for family devotions. I have chosen this book to be published in a
soft Italian leather-tone material, like an old leather glove waiting
to be picked up and used over and over again. With each use, it will
become more familiar, more pliable, and more cherished.
As you “Plough” through issues of relationships, finances,
work, and worship, may this wonderful work by Charles Spurgeon be a
help and an inspiration to you.
